MHPC is among the developers of the first pan-European Master’s programme in HPC

October 13, 2021

SISSA and ICTP will train the next generation of HPC experts, in the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking initiative, as members of a European consortium

Designing and implementing the first pan-European High Performance Computing (HPC) pilot Master’s programme. This is the main task of the new born consortium of European universities, research/supercomputing centres and industrial partner that includes SISSA and ICTP Master in High Performance Computing as selected members. With a total budget of EUR 7 million, it will develop a higher education programme to educate students and expert skilled in the HPC field. In fact, from Autumn 2022, the consortium will offer courses providing students with outstanding career perspectives in the rapidly expanding field of HPC.

Professor Luca Heltai, Director of MHPC says: "SISSA and ICTP, co-founders of the MHPC Specializing Program, have been pioneers in educating the last eight generations of experts in High Performance Computing. Today, we are proud to be part of the first pan-European program to create an HPC master's degree and educate the next generation of HPC experts”.

As stated in the official press release, a central goal of the initiative is to strengthen mobility between European universities, research centres, and industry. The new HPC-centred Master’s programme will reach out to scientific and industrial target groups and serve key actors in the private and public sector. The consortium, lead by University of Luxembrug, was selected following a call for proposals launched in March 2021 by EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, a European initiative aiming to develop a world-class supercomputing and data infrastructure in the EU and to support a highly competitive and innovative HPC ecosystem.

Anders Dam Jensen, Executive Director of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, said: “Thanks to this Master’s programme, we will train the next generation of HPC experts in Europe. EuroHPC Joint Undertaking is building a world-class supercomputer infrastructure. Ensuring the availability of a high-skilled workforce to operate, use, and further develop these machines and their applications is perhaps the most sustainable investment in HPC. I am delighted that we can start working with the University of Luxembourg, as well as this consortium of European partners, to further HPC skills in Europe.”
